Our pick
Jetpack Security. Real-time backups, malware scanning and spam protection for $9.95 a month in the first year, which is 50% off. Yearly plans can be refunded within 14 days.
Jetpack is a plugin from Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and WooCommerce. It bundles backups, security scanning, spam protection, speed tools, statistics and more into one plugin. The free version is useful by itself, and the paid plans add the parts most site owners end up needing: real-time backups and malware scanning.
This review covers what Jetpack costs, what each plan includes, and who should pay for it.
Jetpack pricing at a glance

What you get for free
Jetpack Free has no time limit and does not ask for a credit card. It includes:
- Protection against brute-force login attacks
- Downtime monitoring, which emails you when your site goes offline
- A global image CDN and lazy loading for images
- Basic site statistics for personal sites
- Related posts, subscriptions and a simple newsletter
The free plan has limits. The activity log keeps only the last 20 events, statistics are for personal use only, and there are no backups or automatic malware fixes. For a hobby blog that may be enough. For a site that earns money, it is not.
Jetpack Security
This is the plan most site owners should look at first. It includes three products:
- VaultPress Backup: real-time cloud backups with 10 GB of storage and unlimited one-click restores.
- Jetpack Scan: real-time malware scanning with one-click fixes, plus a web application firewall.
- Akismet: spam filtering for comments and forms, up to 10,000 checks a month.
You also get a 30-day activity log, so you can see what changed on the site before something broke.
Jetpack Growth
Growth costs the same as Security but is aimed at building an audience. It includes the full Stats and Social features, unlimited subscriber imports, newsletters, paid content and paywalls, display ads through WordAds, and more than 40 extra editor blocks. Transaction fees on payments drop from 10% on the free plan to 2%.
Choose Growth if you run a blog or newsletter and want readers and income. It does not include backups or malware scanning.
Jetpack Complete
Complete includes everything Jetpack sells: backups with 1 TB of storage, Scan and the firewall, Akismet for 60,000 checks a month, commercial-use Stats, VideoPress with 1 TB of video storage, Boost for site speed, Social with unlimited shares, Site Search, Jetpack AI and the CRM.
At $599.40 a year after the first year, it only makes sense if you will use several of those products. If you only need backups and security, the Security plan is a quarter of the price.
What we like
- One plugin, one bill. Backups, security and spam protection come from one company and are managed in one place.
- Real-time backups. Every change is saved as it happens, which matters for shops where orders arrive all day.
- A useful free plan. Brute-force protection and downtime alerts cost nothing.
- Refund period. Yearly plans can be refunded within 14 days.
What to watch out for
- The price doubles after year one. Budget for the renewal price, not the first-year price.
- You need a WordPress.com account. Jetpack connects your site to WordPress.com to work.
- Only yearly plans get the best price. Yearly billing is what the pricing page shows.
- Cheaper single-purpose plugins exist. If you only want backups, a dedicated backup plugin can cost less. Jetpack is worth it when you want several of its tools.
Which plan should you choose?
- Personal blog, small budget: start with Free.
- Business site or online shop: Security. Backups and malware scanning are the two things you will regret not having.
- Blog or newsletter that wants to earn: Growth.
- Busy site that needs video, search and speed tools too: Complete.
If you are also choosing a host, note that some managed hosts include Jetpack in the price. Pressable includes Jetpack Security on every plan, which changes the maths.
Verdict
Jetpack Security is a sensible buy for any WordPress site that would cost you money if it went down or got hacked. The first year is cheap, the renewal is not, so decide with the renewal price in mind. Try the free plan first, and upgrade when the site starts to matter.
