Quick answer

Most sites should buy Jetpack Security. It covers backups, malware scanning and spam for $9.95 a month in the first year. Complete costs $360 a year more after year one, and is only worth it if you need video, search or 1 TB of backups.

Jetpack sells two plans that include backups and security: Security and Complete. Complete costs two and a half times as much. This comparison shows exactly what the extra money buys, so you can tell whether you need it.

The short answer

Most sites should buy Jetpack Security. It covers the three things that protect a site: backups, malware scanning and spam filtering. Choose Complete only if you will also use at least two of its extras, such as video hosting, site search or the speed tools.

Price

Jetpack Security Jetpack Complete
First year $9.95 a month ($119.40) $24.95 a month ($299.40)
Renewal $19.95 a month ($239.40 a year) $49.95 a month ($599.40 a year)
Billing Yearly Yearly
Refund period 14 days 14 days

Both plans are half price in the first year. From the second year, Complete costs $360 a year more than Security. That is the number to weigh against the extra features.

What both plans include

  • VaultPress Backup: real-time cloud backups with one-click restores.
  • Jetpack Scan: real-time malware scanning with one-click fixes.
  • Web application firewall.
  • Akismet: spam filtering for comments and forms.

Is 10 GB of backup storage enough?

For most blogs and small business sites, yes. A typical small WordPress site, with its database, themes, plugins and a few years of images, fits well inside 10 GB. Sites that outgrow it are usually large shops, photography sites, or sites that host their own video. If that is you, the 1 TB on Complete matters.

When Complete is worth it

Complete makes sense when you would otherwise pay for several of its parts separately. It suits you if at least two of these are true:

  • You host video on your site and want it ad-free and fast.
  • Your site has thousands of posts or products and visitors rely on search.
  • You run a commercial site and want Jetpack Stats.
  • Your site is too large for 10 GB of backups.
  • You get more than 10,000 comments or form entries a month.

If only one applies, compare the price of Security plus that single Jetpack product against Complete before you decide. Jetpack sells most of these tools separately.

When Security is the better buy

  • You run a blog, portfolio or small business site.
  • You run a small or medium online shop and mainly need orders backed up in real time.
  • You want protection without paying for tools you will not open.

Verdict

Start with Jetpack Security. It covers the risks that can actually take a site offline, at less than half the price. Move to Complete later if your site grows into video, heavy search use or large backups. There is little reason to pay for Complete before you need what it adds.
