Price

For one site, Pressable is $50 a year cheaper at the entry level. WordPress.com becomes cheaper if you commit for longer: the three-year term works out to $210 a year. WordPress.com also includes a free domain for the first year, which Pressable does not.

The bigger difference appears with more than one site. WordPress.com prices each site separately, so three sites on Business cost $900 a year. Pressable’s three-site plan costs $450 a year, and its five-site plan costs $600. For anyone managing several sites, Pressable is far cheaper.

Traffic and storage

WordPress.com Business gives 50 GB of storage and its pricing page lists no monthly visit limit. Pressable’s entry plan gives 20 GB and 30,000 visits a month, with overage fees if you go beyond that: $1.20 for every extra 1,000 visits and $1.00 for every extra GB.

If your traffic is high or unpredictable, WordPress.com is the safer choice for a single site, because a busy month will not change your bill.

Backups, security and testing

Both hosts take care of backups and security. WordPress.com Business includes real-time backups. Pressable includes Jetpack Security on every site, which bought separately renews at $239.40 a year, along with hourly database backups and daily full backups. Our Jetpack review explains what that covers.

Pressable gives every site a staging copy and a sandbox copy, so you can test a plugin update or a redesign before visitors see it. If you make frequent changes to a live site, that is worth a lot.

Control

Pressable is a normal self-hosted WordPress install on managed servers, so you can use any plugin or theme. WordPress.com Business adds developer tools such as SFTP, SSH, WP-CLI and GitHub deployments, and behaves much like a self-hosted site, inside the WordPress.com dashboard. Our guide to WordPress.com vs self-hosted WordPress covers that difference in more detail.

Which one should you choose?

  • One business site with growing traffic: WordPress.com Business. More storage, no listed visit limit, and a free domain for the first year.
  • Two or more sites: Pressable. The multi-site plans cost much less per site.
  • Freelancers and agencies: Pressable. Staging, sandbox and free migrations on every site suit client work.
  • You want the lowest long-term price for one site: WordPress.com Business on a three-year term.
  • You test changes often: Pressable, for staging and sandbox on every plan.
